The Uncomfortable Chart: ChargePoint on Trend Watch
A workflow diary: Trend Watch listed ChargePoint at $6.25 while the composite technical opinion still said sell. Eleven days later the stock was 45% higher.
Third diary entry, and this one is about the trades you almost do not look at, because the chart is ugly and every composite indicator agrees it should stay ugly. Sometimes that is exactly the setup.
A listing that contradicted itself
On Monday, August 24, the Trend Watch list carried 99 names, and one of them was ChargePoint (CHPT) at $6.25. What made the row interesting was the contradiction inside it: the proprietary Trend Watch indicator had flagged an active bullish trend turn, which is the condition for being on the list at all, while the broader composite technical opinion on the same row still read 40% Sell, short-term 50% Sell.
That disagreement is not a bug. Composite opinions average more than a dozen indicators across short, medium and long timeframes, and after a long decline the long-timeframe components stay bearish for months. Trend Watch is built to react to price structure shifts earlier than that average can. So a fresh trend turn on a beaten-down chart will routinely look exactly like this: the turn signal on, the consensus still against it. If you require both to agree, you are structurally late.
The five-minute check
I opened the chart, and it was as uncomfortable as expected: a low-priced stock in a long downtrend with the first higher structure barely visible. The AI chat next to the chart got two questions: how the recent sessions' volume compared to the preceding month, and what the news flow around the name looked like. The point of asking is speed, and the answers come with sources, so the five minutes include the checking. CHPT went on the watchlist with a mental note: early, unconfirmed, size accordingly or not at all.
Eleven days later
| Date | Event | Price | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon Aug 24 | On Trend Watch, composite opinion 40% Sell | $6.25 | 0.0% |
| Fri Sep 4 | Where it stands as this entry is written | $9.08 | +45.3% |
The same August 24 list also held Swvl at $2.21, which stands at $5.52 today, a gain of 149.8% that we mention for completeness and with a warning attached: at these price levels, percentages are cheap. A $2 stock moves 10% on volume an index name would not notice, and the same violence works downward.
The honest footnote
Low-priced stocks in early trend turns are the widest-outcome corner of the market; for every CHPT week like this one, the list has carried turns that failed within days, and this entry exists because we picked a winner afterwards. The durable lesson is narrower and does not depend on the outcome: the disagreement between an early trend indicator and a lagging composite is information, not noise, and the platform shows you both on the same row so the tension is visible before the resolution.
